Welcome to this month’s edition of our newsletter. A big thank you to our outgoing Chairman, Chris Hall, who supported us through difficult times during lockdown, which none of us expected to go on for so long. Luisa Mackey takes over as Chair for the next year.

Each month we will pick a member to answer these questions.

Luisa Mackey
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHEN DID YOU JOIN AUDLEY STRIDERS RUNNING CLUB?
I started running in 2012 when I gave up playing hockey. I had never run before but thought I was fairly fit….. until I tried a run! I managed half way round the lake at Trentham before I threw up.
I started running with ASRC from the very beginning – Nov 2018. I was so keen for there to be a club in Audley as I really didn’t like running on my own.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A RUNNING CLUB?
It’s the people and knowing no matter how fast or slow you are there are always people there to push you along and make running more fun.
WHEN AND WHO DO YOU RUN WITH THE CLUB?
I run most Tuesdays. And I’ll run with anyone that will have me!
TELL US YOUR HISTORY OF RUNNING?
I started in September 2012 and my aim was to be able to run 5k in under 30 minutes by the time Race for Life came around in June in 2013 15 years. I ran that race in around 27 minutes, a time I’ve never managed to get back to!
I did the Alsager 5 a few times, always ran a Race for Life and my First 10K was at Tatton Park in December 2016.
I’ve been plagued by injury over the years, I struggled with Labyrinthitis, Plantar Fasciitis, my Achilles went and then in January this year I had a knee injury. But with careful treatment, rest and building my running back up I’ve managed to come back from all the above and hope to remain healthy this winter!
I would say though, that I only properly started running when I joined the club.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT?
Completing a race for life at Trentham Gardens without walking up the hill by the waterfall!!
WHAT IS YOUR RUNNING AMBITION
To stay fit and healthy
WHY DO YOU RUN?
So, I can eat and drink what I like. Isn’t that why everyone runs????
FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN AROUND AUDLEY
I love our club run to the Millpond and strangely I do love the run to the monument!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST RUN?
Betley 10K in August this year. It was so hot and I didn’t like the course!
BEST RUNNING PHRASE?
Doesn’t matter how slow or fast you are. You’re still quicker than the people sitting on their sofas
HAVE YOU EVER LOST YOUR RUNNING MOJO AND HOW DID YOU GET IT BACK?
Loads of times. Honestly just dragging myself out again and remembering why I do it. Being at the clubs helps so much though. Having people there to run with makes a huge difference personally.
WHO WOULD BE ON YOUR WISH LIST TO RUN WITH?
Steve Cram, Daley Thompson or Jo Pavey
WORST/BEST RUNNING ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Just keep running! Oh and I really hate it when people tell me I’m nearly there with 2k to go!!
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU RUN?
Work and stuff I need to do at home. I find it a great time to think things through. I like to listen to a podcast too.
RUN TO TIME OR DISTANCE?
Distance
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY?
I really enjoy any race where there are lots of striders but I really enjoyed the first Race for Life I did with my children, Alexander and Nicolas, who left me for dust but cheered me on at the end!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRE-RACE RITUALS AND FOOD AND DRINK.
Earl Grey tea and weetabix or porridge.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO RUN, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Somewhere flat!!!
WHAT’S YOUR ONE RACE ESSENTIAL?
Being well rested and well fuelled
WOULD YOU RUN A MARATHON WITHOUT GETTING A MEDAL?
I would never run a marathon!
WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING AT THE MOMENT?
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Review of Minutes Minutes of previous meeting Approved Chairs Report Report of the last twelve months given by Luisa Mackey as Acting Chair. The full report can be viewed separately and will be sent to members not in attendance along with AGM minutes. Committee member reports Treasurer Nikki Ratcliffe reported how the problems setting up a Strider bank account during covid prevented a bank account being opened at that time. An alternative of using the bank account in the name of the previous Audley Running club had been suggested by Deb Hewitt Gilmore as this was still active. Nikki thanked Deb for all her hard work to make this possible and work is still ongoing to alter signatories.
There is currently £2739.54 in the bank account, some of which is earmarked for a new gazebo with the Audley Striders logo on as well as tops for run leaders.

Vice Chair Report
My aim in the last year as being Vice Chair was to support Chris as Chair and support other members and the club through uncertain times.
During the summer of 2020 we supported club member Sarah Parsons with her idea of a club relay marathon. We actually had over 30 runners taking on an individual mile and raised £860 money for The Nappy Project and Audley Cricket Club.
The club reopened in September 2020 under Covid rules amid weekly changes of what we could and couldn’t do. We managed 6 weeks of running before we went back into lockdown that Autumn.
That didn’t stop the Striders though. We supported Alessi Restaurant with their donation of food and gifts to The Alice Charity for children and teenagers who otherwise may receive nothing.
Our Festive 5K ran virtually in December, once again sponsored by the Rotary Club of Audley. We raised £640 which we donated to The Alice Charity.
We reopened again after Easter in April 2021 with a bang. We ran a very successful C25K, gained new members and retained old members. We also added shorter runs in order to support members who had stopped running during lockdown.
Real races were back and we were delighted to support members taking on half and full marathons and encouraging our new recruits to go an extra mile or two and get PBs.
We’ve done some fabulous away runs at Bathpool, Alsager and Silverdale – the latter ending with some great hospitality from The Best of British Beer.
We currently have one run night a week with an average of 25 members attending.
